Faculty Deparment Series — Fabrice Penot, Le Labo
Our first encounter with the Le Labo brand was through a gift from Justin Chung when he visited our studio during the winter of 2014. It was the SANTAL 26 candle in a thick glass that has a label with our studio’s name Studio Faculty. Composed of natural ingredients such as cardamom, iris, violet and ambrox, the candle has a mildly smoky, leathery smell similar to an old hotel’s fireplace. It was the perfect scent for our studio space.
A year later, through a photoshoot for Cereal Magazine vol. 9, Justin met Fabrice Penot, one of the founders of Le Labo, and was instantly connected. Justin shared his personal project Faculty Department with Fabrice, and the conversation inspired the idea of a short video project for Faculty Department Series. In the video, Fabrice talks about slowness, the beauty of imperfection and the awareness of the impermanence of life—”to capture this feeling and emotion”, Penot explains, “to move people with just a spray—it is magical”.
