Faculty is a design practice founded on the principles of intention and realization. Established in 2012, Faculty helps organizations express their identity and purpose through strategy, design and direction. We value the relationships we build both locally and globally through collaboration, and our continued objective is to create a better future through design.

Design Vision

From the moment we wake up, our minds are filled with messages. From the notifications on our phone; that poster at the bus stop; the billboards and signage on our way to work—all projecting and calling for our attention each day. In society, our ability to speak and be heard is vital to our living and yet, it is also a privilege. What we found to matter most, is the fulfillment of being understood and connected to one another.

In our practice, we are constantly striving to achieve this goal by asking “what are we really saying to the world through our work, through design?” and “how can we create meaningful work that invites open dialogue and presents content in its truest form, removed of all unnecessary distractions?”.
Graphic design to us then, is about communication with intention. How can we communicate our client’s best intentions to the world and how can we use design to inspire action, bring awareness, or create delight?

And while these are our aspirations, we are acutely aware of the state of our world today and the challenges we face together. This consciousness puts into perspective the impermanence of our work while giving us a realistic gauge of our place in the world and where we can make a true impact.

Design Methodology

From our perspective, our purpose as designers is ultimately to identify the value, and in turn, visualize that value for the world. In our studio, this is what we loosely call ‘value visualization’.

We believe good design can:

  • Lift one emotionally.
  • Inspire action for good.
  • Change an environment.
  • Bring value (to an object).
  • Repurpose (an object).
  • Communicate on a deeper level and bring clarity.
  • Shift perspectives.
  • Bring greater value (to an object) and prolong its
relevance and impact.
  • Reduce and refine, remove the unnecessary.
  • Create and reflect beauty.

Our design approach is oriented around three elements:

Sensibility

  • Subtle
  • Refined
  • Concise
  • Delicate
  • Nuance

Dedication (Work)

  • Personal
  • Thorough
  • Detail-oriented
  • Driven
  • Meticulous

Hope (Vision)

  • Sustainable (people and planet)
  • Justice (activism, empathy)
  • Optimism (imagination, dream, aspirations)

Ultimately, it breaks down to:

  1. How we see the world (sensibility)
  2. How we work everyday (dedication)
  3. How we dream of the future (vision)

Daily Practice

So what does this mean for our everyday practice within the studio from a practical sense?

We strive to partner with brands/clients that are bringing a product, service or message that adds value to society. In each project, we try to ask the question: “what is the value that this company brings to their end user through what they sell/offer?” and do our best to realize the true value at hand. This is what makes a brand’s existence worthwhile to the world.
