OWIU (The Only Way Is Up) is a full-service Architecture and Design office based in Los Angeles, CA. OWIU specializes in intentional designs and creates holistic environments that adapt with its inhabitants over time.

We were connected with studio owners and designers Joel Wong and Amanda Gunawan through mutual friends and quickly learned of their unique design practice that meets at the intersection of architecture, construction and product design. When it comes to architecture and interiors, as one of their testimonials wrote “[OWIU’s] sweet spot is right where preservation meets renovation. They seek to honor the past and build for the evolution of the current inhabitants.” Such was the case for their recent project Palmero House.

As renovations began for the project, Joel and Amanda reached out to us with a desire to create a printed book documenting the transformation of Palmero House from start to finish. This would become the first volume of their forthcoming collection of printed case studies. Having been brought on to the project at the early stages, it was an equally rewarding experience to witness the transformation of the house as months went by.

Layout structure as a reflection of house design

Much of our inspiration and visual approach to this book is drawn directly from the Palmero House itself. The vertical placement of the chapter title and pagination for example, is in reference to the strong horizontal line that cuts across the exterior of the house at 1/5 of the structure height.

All photography in the book was captured by our mutual friend and lifestyle photographer Justin Chung. Unlike the common straight-on photographic approach to architecture, Justin’s photography uniquely captures the sensibilities of the interior, communicating a feeling of what its like to be in the house. The final printed book is a 48-page hard cover and smyth-sewn case study. This document acts as a detailed reflection on inspiration, planning, execution, and the finished property. Palmero House is the first of many more case study publications to come from OWIU.
